Requirements for the
CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™:

 | EDUCATION:
Complete
the Curriculum at College for Financial Planning, Denver, Colorado to
master over 100 topics in the following general areas of study:
|
 | Process of Financial Planning |
 | Insurance Planning |
 | Investment Planning |
 | Income Tax Planning |
 | Retirement Planning |
 | Employee Benefits |
 | Estate Planning
 | Course work can be completed in 18 to 24 months. |

 | EXAMINATIONS:
 | Each candidate for the CFP® credential takes a
3-hour examination on each major curriculum area to show successful
mastering of the material. |
 | Once the education requirements have been met,
the CFP® candidate must successfully pass a 10-hour comprehensive examination
administered over two days. Purpose of the exam is to demonstrate the
ability to apply the financial planning education to case situations in
order to protect the public by assuring that the CFP® candidate can practice
at the required level of competency. |

 | WORK EXPERIENCE: A CFP®
candidate, with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. college or
university, must have three years of financial planning apprenticeship.
Without the baccalaureate degree, a CFP® candidate must have 5 years of
apprenticeship in order to receive certification. |
 | ETHICS: After each
candidate has completed the foregoing requirements, he/she must sign an
"ethics statement" swearing to abide by the CFP® Board of
Standards' Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility. A CFP®
candidate must disclose any past or pending litigation or agency proceedings
regarding professional conduct. |
 | CONTINUING EDUCATION:
Every 2-year licensing period, a CFP® practitioner must obtain 30 hours of continuing
education. Two of the 30 units must be the CFP® Board's Code of Ethics and
Professional Responsibility course. |
 | PRACTICE STANDARDS: CFP®
practitioner must adhere to the specific practice standards established by the CFP®
Board of Standards. |
 | The Rules and Procedures for practicing as
a CFP® professional
are quite specific and carry severe penalties including: private
censure, suspension of certification, revocation of certification and public letter of
admonition. |
